Ps 95:1 “O come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.”
Continuing our tradition of excellence in music with strong congregational singing is a high priority at First Pres. When we sing, ring or play, we are leading members and friends in true worship and praise. We are blessed to have talented musicians leading three services, offering traditional (8:00 chapel), contemporary (9:15) and blended (10:30) service music. At our blended service, congregational singing includes new songs of praise, as well as the traditional, great hymns of faith, led by our recently enhanced Reuter pipe organ, praise band, handbells and occasional orchestral instruments. Anyone who loves to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord” is encouraged and welcomed into the warm fellowship of the various music groups.
Music Ministry Opportunities:
Sanctuary Choir – The Sanctuary Choir is open to all who love to sing! We meet for practice and fellowship on Wednesday nights from 7:00 – 8:15 pm, and Sunday mornings at 10:00 am. At the Sunday morning 10:30 am service, the Sanctuary choir presents an anthem and helps to lead the congregation in singing the hymns and other service music. A sectional rehearsal of the basses and tenors of the choir is offered at 6:30 pm on Wednesdays, and this group performs occasionally as the “Back Row Singers”.
Handbell choirs: Handbells are a handful of fun! First Pres. has two handbell choirs, the Tower Ringers, which rehearses Tuesdays at 5:15, and the Church Street Bells which rehearses Wednesdays at 5:15. We ring in worship as choirs monthly, and small groups add joyful sounds to hymns and readings often as appropriate. Beginning workshops can be scheduled in August and January as needed. Ringing handbells rewards us with fun, fellowship, and exercise for both body and brain, as well as the opportunity to enhance our worship services with beautiful music.
Praise Band – The Praise Band consists of instrumentalists as well as singers, and we are open to new members who can play a needed instrument or lead singing with a microphone. The Praise Band meets on Sunday mornings at 8:15, and leads the music at the 9:15 am service. The Praise Band also participates once or twice a month in the 10:30 am “Blended” service.
Women’s Ensemble – A select group of ladies who enjoy singing 3-4 part harmonies of sacred music meets each Wednesday evening from 6 :30-7:00 p.m. The ladies sing for special events as well as service music about once monthly.
Children's Music - A meaningful part of our Church School experience is gathering each Sunday for a joyful time singing praise to God, learning hymns of the church and celebrating our faith in Jesus Christ and his love for all people. Hand chimes and rhythm instruments are often incorporated into this brief music period.
Bells On Wheels - A traveling group, Bells on Wheels, rings in the community for nursing homes, special programs, and weddings throughout the year. Other small ensembles and soloists ring in worship as interest and rehearsal time allow.
Space is again available in the Wednesday 5:15 group, the Church Street Bells. In late August of each year a workshop can be scheduled to initiate any would-be ringers into the world of handbells…….from basic music reading on up to the basic ringing skills.
Contact Barbara, the church office, ( 429-4195) or any current ringer to indicate your interest. We have a lot of fun ringing, rehearsing, eating, sharing laughs, and enriching the worship experience at First Pres. with our music.
